The Solamnia Rift is a natural rift that connects the inhabited worlds of Eamon and Krynn. Its terminus on Eamon is located on a low ridge west of the Wyvern Mountains in the Empire of Dorier, about 35 miles southeast of Dorier City and 25 miles north of Nan-on-Cledra. The terminus on Krynn lies in the western Plains of Solamnia near the foothills of the Vingaard Mountains.
The rift formed around the year 490 YA (445 PC on Krynn) and was quickly explored by scouts from both Dorier and Solamnia. Each nation found the other to be peaceful and culturally compatible, so diplomacy and trade was soon established between them. For more than four centuries goods and knowledge flowed through the rift, enriching both nations.
When the Cataclysm struck Krynn in 878 YA (caused by a huge meteor thrown by angry gods), Solamnia survived but suffered widespread damage and loss of life. Many thousands of refugees fled through the rift to find safety on Eamon, swelling the Krynnish population in Dorier. Today their language, beliefs, and traditions remain part of the culture of the kingdom.
Following the Cataclysm the terminus on Krynn remained open, but roughly a year later a nearby mountain destabilized by the disaster collapsed and the rift was buried under a massive landslide of earth and stone. Early efforts to mine out the debris from the Eamon side proved ineffective and dangerous, so contact between the worlds was lost. In recent years a new effort to clear the Krynnish end of the rift has made progress, with a stable, reinforced space now surrounding the rift. Hopes are that a tunnel up to the surface can soon be completed and contact with Solamnia finally restored.
