The Wyvern Mountains stretch roughly 250 miles from southeastern Evenhold to northeastern Dorier and act as the western wall of the Desert of Terza.
Starting in the grassy foothills of eastern Duneshire, the range rises quickly into tall, sharp, and often snow-capped peaks along the eastern border of Trowmarch and the kingdom of Rinillion. The clouds that perpetually blow off the warm Malphigian Sea are driven upward and condense, making the windward slopes verdant and laced with innumerable steams, while leaving the eastern slopes in the parched rain shadow. Mount Eilaak, a particularly prominent peak, rises above the range's western spur.
The peaks gradually soften further south and ultimately flatten out into a wide pass of hills and elevated plains before rising again as the Spartu Mountains to the south. Scattered colonies of ascetic monks known as Essenes live in the southernmost parts of the range, leading often hermitic lives dedicated to mysticism and contemplation of the divine.
The range is named for the winged, two-legged dragon species known as wyverns that inhabit it. Abundant in past millennia, they're now mostly found in the northern half of the mountain chain, living in the high elevations and descending to hunt.
