Toril is an inhabited magical world far from Eamon and Earth, occupying a region known as Realmspace. The planet's inhabitants are a familiar mix of humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, orcs, gnomes, and other races, as well as a pantheon of local deities. Its sister planet is Abeir; the two were originally a single world until the Overgod Lord Ao divided it into two.
Toril's largest continent is Faêrun. In the local timekeeping system known as the Dalereckoning it's currently early in the year 1372 DR.
Connections to Eamon
Details of the earliest connections to Toril are lost in the mists of history, but many thousands of years ago one or more rifts are known to have connected Faêrun and Addar and allowed for moon elves to enter Eamon.
In present-day Addar the only known rift to Toril is the Green Gate. Formed naturally over two thousand years ago, its local terminus is situated near the city of Lumen, while its Torilian terminus lies in the High Forest of Faêrun. The rift initially served as a rich channel for trade and the sharing wisdom with the local Eaerlanni elves, but two disasters on Toril — Karsus's Folly in 507 BA and the collapse of the Eaerlanni realm in 712 YA — caused authorities in Lumen to more tightly control and ultimately seal the rift in order to prevent incursions. It remains closed to all but occasional specialists.
Some of the Eaerlanni elves who fled the destruction of their realm passed through the Green Gate and took shelter in the city of Lumen. Descendants of these refugees now form a small but thriving culture in and around Lumen, and have established strong cultural connections with other elf populations on Addar. Prior to Karsus's Folly some Netherese humans also settled in Lumen, but few enough that their descendants haven't fully retained the Netheril language or culture.
