Named for its long stretches of sandy, wind-swept coastline, Duneshire in the Kingdom of Evenhold sits between the Bay of Lindom and the northern Wyvern Mountains and is home to a scattering of settlements. The largest is Hogarth, a shabby community of mud streets and simple wooden buildings whose inhabitants are oppressed and improverished by the arrogant shire lord who lives in Hogarth Castle. Others include the fishing villages of Hythe and Nesslebay and the border town of Eldreth.

Though not affluent, the folk of the western shire make an adequate living fishing the coastal waters, farming barley and oats, and raising livestock. To the east the land rises and becomes semi-arid, first forming a broad, high plateau crossed by several deep canyons and then rising more sharply up to the northernmost peaks of the Wyvern Mountains. The thinning foliage reveals a landscape of picturesque rock formations in shades red, orange, yellow, and brown, some of which hide modest veins of gold that attract hopeful miners and panners. Elzod, a powerful local mage and member of the Wizards Council, lives in the eastern hills.
