Chaylum is an exotic mineral that does not form naturally on Eamon. It has the unique property of resisting gravitational attraction and in its refined form can be used to produce vessels that fly without the need for magic.
The only known source of chaylum on Eamon is the Floating Island, an enormous, plate-like slab of planetary crust that hangs miles above the northeastern quarter of the continent of Addar. The island is thought to have been ripped from some far-distant world and carried to Eamon by a violent rift-storm in ancient prehistory. The extreme difficulty of reaching the Floating Island and of safely mining and returning the buoyant ore makes it exceedingly rare and valuable.
In Evenhold the material is sometimes humorously called upsidaisium.
